A sufferer's story, in his own voice

A reading, published with its checks still open. A Vigslist translation.

October 23, 2026 · VAT 17374

A sufferer's story, in his own voice — the preserved reverse of VAT 17374, held for Oshima (2014), pp. 291 and 312, eyeballed, with the front matter of VS 24 as residue.

Held, with its checks still open. The reading stands built and is held; its text is not printed on this page. No claim beyond the entry’s own stated posture is made here. The checks that would settle it are named below and are still open; the wording on this page claims nothing they have not settled.

What it is

A man shut in a house of detention, cursed by his father, cut off from his brothers and sisters, his good name gone in his family’s mouth — and then the turn: his lord’s heart calmed, the king had mercy on him, and trust was put back in the mouth of his family and in-laws. The VS catalogue note (VS 24, p. 13) is the only genre label scholarship has given it — “narrative text in the first person” — and van Dijk compares it to the poems of the suffering righteous: a comparison, not an identification; no source assigns this tablet to Ludlul bēl nēmeqi or to any other named composition, and none of its eleven lines matches a line of those poems in the translations checked. The record’s typed references are copy and discussion only.

Counts

The reading stands built: the preserved reverse, 11 lines — 0 whole, 8 part, 3 fragments, 0 invented.

Held — the named doors

Oshima, Babylonian Poems of Pious Sufferers (Orientalische Religionen in der Antike 14, 2014), pp. 291 and 312 — two page citations to this tablet inside the standard English edition of this text’s own poem-family; the book’s contents narrow the door without closing it — and, as residue, the front matter of VS 24 in print.

What would unlock it: those pages, eyeballed. Until they are, the reading stays held and unprinted.
